19. Colombia. Mi Tierra, Tottenham

Afraid I’ve been a bit lazy with updating this blog – we visited Mi Tierra in October ’22, and I’m only writing this in April ’23 – so will be brief as my memory is a bit blurred.

Colombia holds a special place in my heart – I spent eight months in the country a few years ago, and think it’s one of the best places I’ve ever visited. It’s populated with friendly, straightforward people, an incredible variety of landscapes and some spectacular cities. So, I knew I’d enjoy Mi Tierra if only for reasons of nostalgia.

Now, Colombia doesn’t have a particularly sophisticated cuisine – it leans towards stodgy, bland and hearty, in an almost Anglo-Saxon way. For example, the bandeja Paisa, one regional dish, is like an equatorial full-English. That, in my books, is no bad thing.

Happily for me, there’s a big Colombian community in Tottenham where I live, so it was an easy stroll along to the High Road. Alf had a bit of a trek getting there. But the journey was rewarded with a really decent meal. We started with some Colombian empanadas, which are made with corn flour, stuffed with minced beef and deep fried – a nice crunchy, crispy chew. We also drank Club Colombia beer, a fairly standard lager, but which tasted better while I reminisced at Alf.

I fear I’ve lost the receipt, so can’t remember exactly which mains we ordered – but as the image below shows, it was heavy with grilled meats, plantain, salad and rice. It was filling, tasty, and I’d strongly recommend it – just as I recommend anyone visit the country.
