27. Ethiopia. Agelgil, Islington

The cuisine of Estonia and Eswatini aren’t represented in London so, having eaten at an Eritrean restaurant the week before, it was back to the horn of Africa again for Ethiopian.

That’s not a bad thing at all. We met on Caledonian Road (host to four other Ethiopian restaurants!) and settled into the reasonably busy Agelgil restaurant for dinner.

First up, we ordered a couple of glasses of honey wine, an Ethiopian speciality, which is basically mead. Went down very well.

Neither of us were starving, so we shared a hummus with njera. Not entirely convinced njera goes with hummus, but perfectly fine. Then it was onto our shared main – the Agelgil Special. Just like the main we had the week before, it came out on a bin lid-sized dish draped in a big round njera, and covered in a mouth watering selection of curries to pick at with our hands.

I’m writing this up a little late, so can’t remember the finer details, but there were chicken, lamb and beef curries, a couple of lentil dahls, pickled veg, creamed greens and some sort of cottage cheese. It was all very good (although a green salad on the side was a bit weird), and we polished the lot off, accompanying it all with a decent Ethiopian lager.

If you’re up for a delicious sharing plate, some tasty curries and very reasonable prices, then I’d highly recommend Agelgil. It was a bit of a ‘no frills’ sort of dining experience, but with food that good, it’s hardly a problem.
