18. China. Four Seasons, Chinatown

Afraid I’ve been a bit lazy with updating this blog – we visited Four Seasons in Chinatown in September ’22, and I’m only writing this in April ’23 – so will be brief as my memory is a bit blurred.

Chinese is, of course, one of the world’s great cuisines, with an enormous richness and regional diversity. So, we spent quite a while trying to decide what to eat and where, but ultimately plumped for Chinatown. It’s the hub of the city’s Chinese restaurants, decorated with lanterns, statues of dragons, bilingual street signs, and big Paifang wooden gates.

There’s countless food options in Chinatown, but we opted for Four Seasons, a long established place, which seems to be well regarded, and there were queues to get in. The restaurant is best known for its roast duck, so we ordered that, some mixed hors d’oeuvres, Szechuan chilli beef and some Tsingtaos.

All in all, a very enjoyable meal. I’m never entirely sure I’m eating truly ‘authentic’ Chinese food in places like Four Seasons, or if the cooking style has been altered to the Western palate. Nonetheless, still a very enjoyable (and filling!) meal, and hard to fault. Was quite expensive though.

Score: 7/10

Location: 12 Gerrard Street

Cost: £118
